Travis County Approves Traffic Enforcement Pilot!

After more than 6 months of advocating with Travis County, Safer71 is excited to announce that a pilot project to fund 3 additional deputies for dedicated traffic enforcement on SH71 West and US290 West was approved!  This represents the first additional dedicated traffic staff in the County since 2010!

We are extremely grateful to the hard work by Constable Stacy Suits and Commissioner Gerald Daugherty who have believed in the need for safety on these roads since we approached them in 2018.  We believe this program will ensure sustained enforcement presence on our roads and help to change the behavior of poor drivers in the area.

Travis County Budget Hearings

Safer 71 attended the the Commissioners Court budget hearings in support of the Constable Precinct 3 request to add a traffic unit for safety enforcement in Western Travis County.

In the last 10 months the focused enforcement program on SH71 West has helped to reduce deaths by 86%, total crashes by 15%, and total injuries by 34%.

We hope that increased resources will continue to reduce incidents, and assist safety on 290 and 620 who have seen increases in their road tolls over the same period of time.

SH71 Recent Projects Completed

The TxDOT project to resurface SH71 West has now been completed.  This project has installed special asphalt to reduce the likelihood of hydroplaning in wet weather.

A traffic signal has also been installed at Bob Wire Rd, a warning light at Fall Creek Rd, and a protected turn light at Pace Bend Rd (2322).

Work is still being completed to finalize striping and divider posts in key intersections such as Pedernales Summit Parkway at Sweetwater and Bob Wire Rd in Spicewood.

Spicewood Area Improvements

As part of our ongoing communications with TxDOT, Safer71 has been able to accelerate the completion of two long outstanding projects to improve safety on SH71 West in the Spicewood Area.

These include:

  • the addition of a protected left turn when heading East on SH71 at Pace Bend, and;

  • the activation of the flashing caution lights at Fall Creek.

The addition of a center turn lane on SH71 West of the Pedernales River to the County Line is currently slated for construction to commence in 2021.

Safety Corridor Bill Introduced

After discussions with Safer71, State Rep. Vikki Goodwin has introduced House Bill 2814 to the Texas Legislature that would allow TxDOT to implement safety corridors in high fatality areas in the state.  The corridors would allow for double fines (like in construction zones) with the increased revenue generated supporting additional enforcement resources in the area to improve safety.

The long term goal is to change driver behavior in the corridors by increasing awareness of the need to drive more responsibly where there is a known risk of fatal accidents occuring.

Travis County Transportation Survey

Travis County is currently completing their 2050 Blueprint which includes prioritization of numerous projects along the SH71 West Corridor.  These studies are important opportunities for residents to show where they want their tax dollars spent, and to help bring awareness to the critical need for engineering improvements to keep up with the population growth in our area.
